IS the death of Pope Francis a sign that Judgment Day is looming?

The “Prophecy of the Popes” has some people speculating.

The prophecy, a series of 112 cryptic Latin phrases that purport to predict all future popes, first surfaced in 1590. It concludes with a description of the 112th pope, identified as Peter the Roman, whose pontificate will precede the final judgment:

“In the final persecution of the Holy Roman Church, there will sit … Peter the Roman, who will pasture his sheep in many tribulations, and when these things are finished, the city of seven hills will be destroyed, and the dreadful judge will judge his people. The End”

Despite its questionable origins, the Prophecy of the Popes has garnered much attention of late because, counting from the first pope mentioned, Celestine II who reigned in 1143–44, the current Pope Francis turns out to be number 112—the predicted final pontiff.

Adding to the intrigue, the death of Francis comes at a moment of biblical significance:
• On the heels of Resurrection Sunday.
• During the pontiff’s 88th year, signifying a new beginning, or new order, in biblical numerology.
• 434 years, or 62 Sabbatical weeks, from when the Prophecy of the Popes first surfaced in 1590. This is uncanny because in Daniel’s Weeks Prophecy, “62 weeks” precede the death of the true Head of the Church, Messiah Jesus (Dan. 9:26).
• During a Jubilee, the “year of redemption” which marks the beginning of Judgment Day (Isa. 63:2–4). What is interesting is that the Catholic Church does not declare a Jubilee every 49 years, per the biblical command, but according to their own 50 and 25-year reckonings, which began in 1300. As a result, no Catholic Jubilee has corresponded to a biblically calculated Jubilee, except for one: The current year, 2025, marks not only a Catholic Jubilee but also the 70th biblical Jubilee since God commanded the Israelites to start counting Jubilees in 1406 BC. That 2025 marks the 70th Jubilee is significant because the “70th week” is when Judgment Day begins, per the abovementioned “weeks” prophecy (Dan. 9:24).

Because the Bible is the only trustworthy source of prophecy, the Prophecy of the Popes should be regarded with a high degree of skepticism. At the same time, since God causes all things to work together for His purposes, it is fascinating to consider its possible relevance.

Is the death of the 112th Pope a sign that Judgment Day is looming?
Amid of slew of other signs, it seems a distinct possibility.

1. The Prophecy of the Popes was purportedly penned by St. Malachy (1094–1148), after having a vision of future popes, which he recorded as a sequence of cryptic phrases. This manuscript was then deposited in the Vatican Secret Archives and forgotten about until its rediscovery in 1590. The Catholic Church has no official stance on the prophecy.
2. The Prophecy of the Popes states that the final pontiff will “pasture his sheep in many tribulations.” Francis’s papacy has been marked by ideological divisions within the Church, the sexual abuse scandal, intense scrutiny by the public and media, and increasing global crises such as earthquakes, storms, famine, and deadly disease outbreaks. According to the prophecy, “when these [tribulations] are finished, the city of seven hills will be destroyed, and the dreadful judge will judge his people.” In Revelation 17 and 18, “the city of seven hills” refers to “Mystery Babylon,” the unnamed wicked city that is judged around the time of the Rapture (Rev. 18).
3. The Jubilee is the year of “liberty” or “redemption” (Lev. 25), which foreshadows the resurrection–rapture of believers:
• Paul speaks of the “liberty” and bodily “redemption” of the Church at Jesus’ coming (Rom. 8:19–23).
• Jesus tells the Church that when they see the signs of His coming, to look up because their “redemption” is near (Luke 21:28).
• Christians are sealed by the Holy Spirit unto the day of “redemption” (Eph. 4:30).
• The Gentile Ruth, a type of the Church, is “redeemed” by marriage, a type of the Rapture, by a Jewish Kinsman, a type of Jesus (Ruth 4).
Conversely, for nonbelievers, the Jubilee marks the beginning of the “day of vengeance” (Isa. 61:1, 2; 63:4).

6. In Leviticus 25, God instructs the Israelites to start counting Sabbatical and Jubilee years when they enter the Promised land. Most chronologists date the entry into the Land to spring 1406 BC (1406 BC + 70 Jubilees = 2025).
7. God causes all things to work for His purposes, even things meant for evil (Rom. 8:28; Gen. 50:20).

IMPORTANT MESSAGE: No one knows the day or hour of Jesus’ return (Matt. 24:36). However, a convergence of biblical signs and timelines suggests that it is near. To escape the judgment reserved for a God-rejecting world, one must know Jesus as Lord and Savior. If you have not yet done so, call on His name and believe that He is the Son of God who died for your sins and was raised from the dead, and you will be saved (Rom. 10:13).
